Talon knew this might be a bad idea to do with Mia, but he didn’t have much of a choice. Dante said it was an emergency and he wasn’t going to question the man.

Dante had been working with the humans ever since the invasion had fallen. His cooperation had been priceless to bridge the information gap between the humans and the vampires. Dante’s allegiance hadn’t been clear, but he seemed like a good guy whose break with the Vopura had been clean.

The fact that he was bonded to a human helped clarify what side he was on.

Bonding was something Talon was still having a hard time wrapping his head around. Dante had drank some of the human’s blood and the human had drank some of his. Somehow this had happened by accident, though Talon had no idea how.

After the blood exchange, Dante had been psychically and physically linked to the human, Alyssa. Luckily for him, Alyssa seemed to feel the same way about him, and she was a good human to know. She had connections in the human military, and as a social manipulator, a job title she’d made up, she’d been one of the main reasons the humans had been able to bury the Siege of Seattle as a military experiment gone wrong instead of an evil vampire invasion.

Talon still didn’t know whether that was the right call, but he was nonetheless grateful that all vampires didn’t have to come out of hiding yet. He’d rather do it on their own terms and not because some assholes decided it for them.

“So who is this Vopura we’re waiting for?” Mia looked out at the empty department store parking lot.

“Dante,” said Talon as he waited for the Vopura to arrive.

“And we can trust him why?”

“Because he’s working with the humans. He’s part of the reason that the siege fell.”

“I don’t know how you can trust any of them. They came here with the sole intention of taking over our world. Why would they just give up on that?”

“You don’t have to worry about this. I need to hear what he has to say and I’ll take you home.”

“I’m just asking questions. I don’t need to be protected from anything.”

“It’s not about protecting. My job is to take care of this. Your job is to keep on learning how to be a vampire. Very different.”

“I’m just saying—”

Headlights shone bright as another car pulled into the lot.

“He’s here. Just stay in the car and I’ll be right back.” He got out of the car before she could argue. And although she did stay in the car, he noticed that she rolled down her window a crack so she could overhear whatever he and Dante said.

Maybe he should’ve pushed this meeting back, but Dante had sounded serious. And he always sounded serious, but with good reason usually. He wasn’t the sort to call if it wasn’t important.

Dante got out of the car without turning it off. Obviously he didn’t expect this meeting to go long.
